Tattoo Ink Allergies: What They Are and What To Do

You finally made the decision to get a tattoo. There’s only one problem. The tattooed area is now itching like crazy, red and swollen. Is it supposed to be this way? While a tattooed area with naturally be irritated, extreme irritation can be the sign of an allergy to the ink. There are a number of ingredients in tattoo ink that can cause allergic reactions. Let’s take a closer look at tattoo ink allergies and what to do if you experience them.

What Causes the Allergic Reaction?

Let’s start with the most common cause of an allergic reaction to tattoo ink – the color red. Red ink may contain pigments made of cadmium sulfide. Once exposed to the sun, cadmium sulfide may cause an allergic reaction (this is also true of yellow ink). A lichenoid allergic reaction is also common with red ink. This reaction will cause small bumps to appear around areas that has been tattooed red. A pseudolymphomatous allergic reaction may occur several days after getting the tattoo and is another allergy to blame on the red ink, though blue and green ink can sometimes cause this reaction as well. Red ink is also to blame for granulomas, though blue, purple and green may also cause this reaction. Another allergic reaction that may occur includes dermatitis, which is due to mercury sulfides.

Symptoms to Look For

It’s important to remember that some irritation is to be expected from a tattoo. Your tattooed area may be red, swollen and irritated for up to three weeks. However, if the problem continues for longer, you may be experiencing an allergic reaction. Other symptoms to look for including flaking skin, a scaly appearance, swelling, purple nodules or a rash. The exact symptoms will vary depending on the ink used.

What to Do

You should never try to treat this type of allergic reaction on your own. It is important to visit your doctor or a dermatologist for proper treatment. In some cases, you may have to have the tattoo removed, but you should never use over-the-counter products. Instead, you should visit a licensed clinic that offers laser tattoo removal services.

Sometimes tattoos just aren’t meant to be. If you begin to experience an allergic reaction, you will need to get treatment right away and may need to have the tattoo professionally removed. Remember, irritation is normal, but extreme symptoms should not be overlooked as they could be an allergic reaction to the tattoo ink.
